Your First Pilates Class

Taking on a new kind of fitness for the first time, no matter what it is, can be intimidating – let us tell you a little more to prepare you for your first class.

A balanced class will take you through a range of different exercises where your spine will move into flexion, extension, rotation and lateral flexion (side bending) and you’ll also do a range of exercises starting from Standing, mobilising and getting the body moving,  laying on your back, side, front, seated, and kneeling.

Don't worry if you think some of these positions aren't achievable for you just now, we have lots of alturnatives to keep you included in the class from start to finish. 

If you come along to a Small Equipment Class you may also use some props like a Pilates ball, straps, bands, rings, hand weights and rollers to challenge your mat practice even more.

Do not expect to be jumping up and down or feeling the ‘burn’ in every class,, but we can assure you that you will work and connect with some of those lesser used muscles. Relax and simply educate yourself on your body, how it feel and moves and the practice.

Don’t wear loose clothing


“Even though it’s a more gentle form of exercise compared to high intensity or cardio workouts, don’t make the mistake of wearing clothing that is too baggy. Choose comfortable, but stretchy clothes so we can see the alignment of your body during class. Some of the more challenging exercises can also be quite compromising, if your clothing is too loose it could gape or get in the way of your moves!”

Keep it simple


Zips, buckles and buttons  and belts and pockets can be uncomfortable when you’re lying on your back, side or front. Jewellery and drawstrings can be dangerous if they are caught in the springs of the equipment and could cause an injury. 

Leave your trainers behind


A class is usually done barefoot so that your foot and ankle movement is unrestricted. So, the good news is that there’s no need to splash out on expensive trainers!

However, if you’re reluctant to get your feet out on show, then you may want to invest in some Pilates socks for extra grip. You can buy these fairly cheaply from many online stores.

Long Hair? Don’t forget a hairband


If you have long hair,  you may want to tie it back so it’s out of your face and you can concentrate on your moves!  It will also make sure it doesnt get caught up in springs on the equipment. All exercises are founded on the principles of precise movement and control, so it’s important that you’re as focused as possible.

 

What Equipment do I need? 

We provide everthing that you need to take part in the studio classes, many of our work places are on raised mat benches with non slip mats. Rest assured that everything you use is disinfected between each client. 

If you are joining at home you may want to invest in a good quality mat and have a cushion or block handy. Sme small equipment such as a pilates Ball. roller and band if you plan to join these types of classes.
You also might be surprised that the exercises can be relatively strenuous, and some people work up a sweat – so it can be useful to bring a towel and your water bottle.
